These rugs are usually woven from hand-spun Afghan wool, renowned for its strength and durability. For the very finest pieces, the wool is shipped first to Belgium to be machine-spun and then returned to Afghanistan for weaving with smaller knots to produce a lustrous 'velvet' texture.
