The town of Hamadan is one of the oldest on the North-west Iranian plateau and serves as the market centre for hundreds of villages in the surrounding plain where most of these rugs are produced, although there is a small production in the town itself.
All Hamadans use the Turkish knot on single-wefted cotton warp and weft, usually in geometric designs and, from the south and east of the area, the Herati design, shown here.
