Persian Kelim and Turkish, Afghan Kilims

Kilims are a terrific type of rug usually made from interwoven wool rather than knotted; the surface is 'flat' instead of having a 'pile'. The origins of Kilims are Turkish or Anatolian, although these rugs are often made in Afghanistan, Iran, India and the Caucasus. Vegetable-dyed wool is the normal fibre used when making kilims, woven using woollen warps and wefts. In recent years some weavers have been replacing wool with cotton as this tends to give a stronger and more secure foundation for the rug.

Our Kilims are from Afghanistan and Indian, Iranian and Turkey (Anatolian). We stock a wide selection of flatweave Kilims that are all hand woven. These versatile rugs are incredibly popular and are commonly used as floor or wall hanging. Like our oriental rugs and carpets, all our Kilims are handcrafted using traditional methods, and these are individually selected based on quality, colour and decoration.

As a family-run business at Jennings, we have been importing oriental carpets and Kilims for over 60 years. During this time, we have built an extensive network of weavers who supply us with top-quality rugs, carpets and Kilims worldwide. The patterns on Kilims help distinguish where they originated with designs unique to particular regions and areas, which have been handed down from generation to generation.

With all Kilims, we highly recommend Foxi-Antislip for use on the floor or carpet underneath the rug. Being a lighter weight means that most of the time, the kilim will move or drift without anti-slip underfoot. We sell Foxi in multiple sizes and will cut to size when needed.
